Set in the world of Norse Mythology, Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria tells the story of Princess Alicia of the city of Dipan and the renegade Valkyrie, Silmeria. After defying Odin, lord of the gods, Silmeria was banished to the mortal realm, to be sealed in the body of a human for her transgressions. A flaw in the sealing process... meant that Silmeria awoke inside the human body, that of Alicia, the princess of Dipan. Because of Silmeria's presence inside of her mind, Alicia was judged insane by her father and sent away from Dipan in disgrace. When Odin discovered that Silmeria was awake inside of Alicia, he sent Silmeria's sister Valkyrie, Hrist, to eliminate Alicia and bring Silmeria back to Valhalla. In order to survive the attacks of god and mortal, Silmeria and Alicia must work together to find a way to save both of their lives.

Hundreds of years before the events of Valkyrie Profile, Silmeria was a faithful servant of Odin, dutifully gathering souls of fallen heroes for her master. Odin sought to possess the Dragon Orb, but its removal would cause Midgard's deterioration so he planned to capture Brahms and use his powerful soul to supplant the Dragon Orb, allowing him to possess the Orb's power without destroying the human world. Silmeria disapproved of Odin's plan and when Odin injured Brahms in a fight, Silmeria rebelled, allowing Brahms to escape and hide within Dylan, one of Silmeria's einherjar. Recognizing the danger Silmeria posed, Odin invoked the Sovereign's Rite, the spell to transmigrate her soul and summon the next Valkyrie in her place. Her soul was meant to remain dormant within Alicia, princess of Dipan, but the spell was not completed, and Silmeria found herself sharing control over Alicia's body.

Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria's lead is Alicia, a warrior princess with an anxiety disorder. The girl is a stammering mess who wouldn't be able to function in society if she weren't possessed ala The Exorcist by a more self-actualized dame. Sharing Alicia's headspace is Silmeria, a rebellious servant of Odin with serious authority issues. This odd couple quest to find an artifact that will help them combat the angry thunder god. Along the way they gather a party of like-minded living warriors. And occasionally the spirits of warriors can be summoned from Valhalla to join team Silmeria in fighting the power.

Following the story of the Valkyrie Silmeria, Valkyrie Profile 2 takes place one hundred years before the events of the original. One of three Valkyries on Midgard tasked to recover the souls of fallen warriors and deliver them to Valhalla, Simleria finds herself cast outside of Odin's inner-circle after disobeying his orders and punished with reincarnation as a mortal on the realm of Midgard. A mistake in the process ... leaves Simeria trapped within the body of Princess Alicia of Dupan. Fearing that an evil force possesses her daughter, the King locks the princess away and announces her death to the public.

Like the other titles in the franchise, Valkyrie Profile 2 is steeped heavily in Norse mythology. The titular character Silmeria is imprisoned in the body of Princess Alicia, but the rebellious Valkyrie refuses to remain dormant, and Odin sends Hrist to retrieve her. The story is littered with secrets and betrayals and will easily hold your attention.

In addition to the complex battle system and the shout-out to 2D gameplay, there are plenty of other reasons to get into Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria. The game's storyline and characters are captivating from the start, although your appreciation may be dependent on how much you remember of the original. The interactions between the contrasting personalities of Silmeria and Alicia, and the characters that join the adventure from the start make for interesting viewing during the game's lengthy, fully voiced cut scenes.
