Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria: Games
built 276 days ago
Silmeria takes place hundreds of years before the tale of Lenneth in the original Valkyrie Profile game. Silmeria is the name of a valkyrie who served the god Odin until the two had a disagreement, and he sealed her spirit into the body of a human. That human happens to be a young princess, who you control in the game. The game opens with the princess entering a large and busy town. As soon as she enters, she begins a lengthy conversation with the disembodied voice of Silmeria. The two appear to have an argument about something, and at one point, the princess shouts at Silmeria, which attracts some curious looks from bystanders.

Without a doubt, Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria is one of the most gorgeous looking games on the PlayStation 2. Just as games like Tourist Trophy have shown that the PS2 can still churn out models that rival big-budget Xbox 360 and PC games, Silmeria proves that the six-year old black monolith can produce amazing looking environments. The only issue comes not from anything tri-Ace has to do with, but the PS2's lack of hardware anti-aliasing. Many environments, specifically Odin's chamber, have far too much shimmering due to jaggies in what should be flush lines. tri-Ace did manage to throw some good-looking character models in the game, but unfortunately sacrificed Radiata Stories' feature of showing each individual piece of gear the characters are wearing during cutscenes and battle. The characters' armor and weapons look good, but the faces' anime style aren't incredibly detailed.

In Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, you take control of a princess named Alicia, a young girl whose fate has been decided by the Norse Gods. You see, the valkyrie Silmeria has been banished from the heavens, and was meant to be reincarnated as a young girl. But due to some kind of cosmic screw up, Silmeria ends up sharing the body of the young Alicia, as the two souls battle for control of the same host. Naturally, this makes the poor girl look like a schizophrenic nutjob, so she’s banished from the kingdom, and left to search the land for a way to set things right. The game is structured like your normal RPG - you run through a town, you run through a dungeon, you fight a boss and repeat. The world map is simply a static screen, where you point and click your locations.

For Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, it seems that Square Enix has reached deep to the backburner of their franchise stove, dusted off a copy of their cult-classic PS1 title Valkyrie Profile and decided it deserved another shot. Not only has Square Enix decided to release this sequel but they have ... recently released a remake of Valkyrie Profile entitled Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth for the PSP much to the elation of RPG fans around the world. While this remake is meant to reacquaint the gaming public with the Valkyrie Profile franchise, Silmeria looks to fix the problems with the original game while improving wherever possible. Upon its release in September, Silmeria will look to improve upon the original’s pacing, gameplay, and graphics.

For years, the original Valkyrie Profile was a forgotten gem. The PlayStation release saw an extremely limited print run at the end of the console's original life cycle. By the time word spread, the game was already incredibly rare, and its value among collectors was matched only by Konami's equally rare (and equally excellent) Suikoden 2. Prices on eBay reached well over $150 for a sealed copy, and as a result, very few people had a chance to play the game. Luckily for fans of rare games, Tri-Ace and Square-Enix revived this almost-forgotten series from the grave for a new generation with Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria.

Valkyrie Profile 2 takes place some time before the original Valkyrie Profile. In this story, one of the three “death goddesses”, Silmeria Valkyrie, has been cast out of the god Odin’s kingdom, Valhalla, and imprisoned in the mind and body of the young princess Alicia from the human kingdom of Dipan. For motives she keeps to herself, Silmeria wants to protect the world of humans, Midgard, from the impending wrath of the gods. The game starts when Alicia escapes certain doom from Dipan castle after getting a premonition from Silmeria. From there, Alicia meets several fellow travelers, some living and some dead, who will all aid her on her quest to find a powerful relic known as the Dragon Orb. At the same time, the kingdom of Dipan is searching for the same relic to wage war on the gods.
