Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria: Enemies
built 276 days ago
The second Valkyrie Profile's main draw is its gameplay. Silmeria introduces an elaborate, yet easy-to-grasp battle system that will appeal to both RPG veterans and relative newbies. Players are given 100 AP (or 0 AP, in the case of an ambush) at the beginning of a fight. This AP can be used to consume an item, cast a spell, or attack an enemy, assuming that the target is in range. The player's party can attack everything within a circle around the controlled characters, though enemies' attack ranges can be cone or line-shaped, depending on the attack. Of course, the enemies don't have carte blanche to attack the player at any time; the player has to move into the field of attack of an NPC to be targeted.

A new feature to Valkyrie Profile 2’s battle system is the ability to attack particular enemy body parts. While these can’t directly be targeted, each part of an enemy has a chance to be broken off. When this happens players have a chance to gain a special item. This is how many of the item creation ingredients are gained. Also, whenever a particular part is destroyed there’s a very small chance that the party will enter a special mode known as “Break Mode”. In Break Mode, the entire party is allowed to attack the enemy for a set amount time regardless of their AP.

That doesn’t mean there is a lack of new stuff in Valkyrie Profile 2.... One of the most drastic changes this time around is the combat system. In the first game, you didn’t really move your characters around during battle. Each character had anywhere from 1-3 attacks and you used the face buttons to determine just who got to attack. Hitting enemies while in the air netted experience crystals while grounded enemies netted purple crystals that refreshed your CP gauge.

As before, Valkyrie Profile is no easy game to beat, although there are some tricks to make it less intimidating. For example, rather than killing all enemies in each encounter, you have the ability to focus your attacks on the leader of each group of enemies; take the leader down and the battle is over, even if he or she was surrounded by a dozen cronies who are still near their full HP levels.

Veteran players may remember Valkyrie Profile’s signature battle system, which involves each participant being assigned to one of the four right thumb buttons. That system returns in the second installment with a few modifications. Most radically, a free movement system is implemented, which means you have to actually move into attack range in order to hit an enemy. Also, unlike the vast majority of RPGs out there, you don’t win by wiping out everything on the battlefield. Battles can be won quickly by eliminating the enemy group’s leader. In fact, players are encouraged to end battles in as little time as possible, and they may be rewarded with usable items.
