Valar: Noldor Elves

The Heralds of the Valar are a magical guild. They receive their gifts from the Valar, the fourteen spirits that entered Arda to give order to the world and fight the growing evil growing. The Heralds are located in the Shire, and accept anyone from the races created by Eru Illuvatar; elves, half-elves, hobbits, and humans.

The Valar were the singers whose song of creation was given visible form and substance by Eru (Iluvatar) in the Vision. It was their knowledge of the Vision of Iluvatar which enabled the Valar to know the future and certain destinies. Like the Children of Iluvatar (men and elves) their dwelling place was the Deeps of Time, in the midst of the innumerable stars.

It was the Valar who first practised marriage and later passed on their custom to the Elves; all the Valar had spouses, save Nienna, Ulmo and of course, Melkor. However, only one such marriage among the Valar took place within the world, that of Tulkas and Nessa after the raising of the Two Lamps.

The Valar dwelt originally on the Isle of Almaren in the middle of the world, but after its destruction and the loss of the world's symmetry, they moved to the western continent of Aman and founded Valinor. The war with Melkor continued, with the Valar creating many wonderful subthemes of Ilúvatar's grand music. Melkor poured all of his energy into the corruption of fell beings like Balrogs, dragons and orcs (which were once Elves, corrupted into Melkor's service). Most terrible of the deeds of Melkor was undoubtedly the destruction of the Two Lamps, and with it the original home of the Valar, the Isle of Almaren. After this vile deed, Melkor was captured and chained for many ages in the fastness of Mandos until he was pardoned by pleading for forgiveness to Manwë.

Later, the Valar heard of the awakening of the Elves in Middle-earth, where Melkor was unopposed. They proposed to bring the Elves to the safety of Valinor. However, to get Elves to Valinor, they needed to get Melkor out of the way. A war was fought, and Melkor's stronghold Utumno was completely destroyed. Then many Elves came to Valinor, and established their cities, beginning Valinor's age of glory.

The Valar were immortal, and do not appear to be able to be destroyed. However, they could be injured. The Maiar could be destroyed. Tolkien's Elves were ... immortal - but they could die of injury or grief.
