Valar: Dark Lord
built 273 days ago
Valar comes from another shard of the Gem of Immortality. Many years ago, around the time Lord British first disappeared, changes began to take place. A small group led by a wealthy landowner began to assert authority, and bands of dark mages and crusaders were sent on clandestine missions throughout the land. Little by little, the old ways were l ost. Crops failed everywhere, monsters became more aggressive and numerous. Former friends and neighbours grew mistrustful of each other, dissent brewing in every corner.

The Valar stormed the gates of Utumno. Hundreds of loyal spirits, even a few of the balrogs, were destroyed, their fëa doomed to wander the world’s dark places as immaterial shadows until the end of time. Which is really distressing.

Decipher's Lord of the Rings roleplaying game includes the intriguing idea of playing a character who is favoured by one of the Valar. The details are on p87 of the Core Rule Book. Unfortunately, only two members of the Valar are described. To improve on this situation, the remaining Valar are described in this article along with a few of the more prominent Maiar.

Melkor built a stronghold in the far North called Utumno and brooded upon ways to foil the designs of the Valar. Thus, as the Valar turned to the creation of Light, creating the Two Lamps, Melkor’s thoughts turned to darkness, following as ever the note of discord and disenchantment he had woven into the Great Music.
