vsbox.jpg Instead of the usual rpg game from Square, Vagrant Story is more of a computer rpg where you explore one dungeon/maze after another. The game has a unique battle system plus some cutting edge new gameplay. Find out more about this game right here as you join Ashley on his quest to stop the evil Sydney.

Though some of the areas in Vagrant Story are difficult to navigate, you have access to two in-game tools to help you. One is the mini-map in the lower right-hand corner of the screen; this should help you explore any single room to the fullest. The other is the built-in map system, which you can use to, at the very least, retrace your steps if you get lost. Since you have these tools for practically all of the game (excepting the Snowfly Forest and Iron Maiden B2), I will not delve extensively into the geography of the game, but rather will deal with the main landmarks and events of each area.

Vagrant Story for PlayStation Review - PlayStation Vagrant Story Review Outside of battle, Vagrant Story continues its control fixation with a maze of menus that lets players customize their experience even more. In addition to the standard RPG equip and inventory screens, Vagrant Story lets you forge your own weapons and armor from items found throughout the game. Ashley can only perform these feats in workshops scattered throughout the game, and each factory can only forge items made from certain materials. As Ashley's weapons gradually become more accustomed to killing each of the six types of monsters, it's worthwhile to build and evolve six weapons through the course of the game. Switching weapons is the one thing not readily accessible through the L2 menu and would make a welcome addition given the frequency they're swapped. In addition to forging new weapons, Ashley can disassemble any weapon and reassemble a new one from its parts, allowing for greater customization.

Vagrant Story for the Sony PSOne The graphics in Vagrant Story are absolutely breathtaking. Every character model is gorgeous, pushing the limits of the aging PlayStation, and then some. The mouths move, the muscles seem to flex, and every square inch is textured with care. No confusing duplicate character in this game, mind you. Even the bit enemies are well-detailed, with the bat looking appropriately batty, and the wolf looking appropriately lupine. Each room has bits of detail that can only be appreciated by hitting Start and looking around in first person view (and this is highly suggested as a means of finding hidden exits).

While initially the game had very little relation to Final Fantasy, recently, with the introduction of Final Fantasy XII, Vagrant Story has become linked to the Final Fantasy Universe. It's biggest link is that it is set in the world of Ivalice, but there are other connections.
Boxart for Vagrant Story From the opening cinema to the climatic and twisty conclusion, Vagrant Story hits all the right notes. Action/RPG fans are in for the adventure of a lifetime with this medieval romp. Hopefully this is only the first installment of a fine saga.
