V for Victory: President Bush
built 271 days ago
The 2004 route to the Democratic nomination for president really began and ended in Iowa with Howard Dean's scream and John Kerry's surprise victory on the backs of the firefighters union. Those who skipped Iowa in 2004, including Gen. Wesley Clark, never caught up and were dead in the water shortly after New Hampshire.
As for the US, the fact that it can invade Iraq and force regime change there would seem to contradict anyone who claimed that it is powerless to deal with the Israelis. But the reality is that Israel is too complex, too hot an issue for any US administration. Many presidents have tried, all have failed. It is going to happen again; with the peace process going nowhere, President Bush is now clearly beginning to disengage from the Middle East.

On Sunday, just days after becoming the first Democrat to officially announce a presidential bid, Vilsack stopped at UNLV for his first date with a tentative suitor considering its options in what will be a long courtship. It was a classic stump speech, one that will eventually be honed from its 45 minutes of heartfelt biographical background and policy ideas to a smooth, energetic quick sale.
A month on, any such hopeful prospect of addressing the realities of Iraqi failure has now vanished beneath a presidential sky beclouded by tired reiterations of an utterly unconvincing “plan for victory”. Indeed the rededication to “complete victory” recalls the May 2003 delusion of “mission accomplished” proclaimed on a banner draped in the background while Bush delivered his notoriously premature speech of celebration on the deck of the USS Lincoln.
ACORN, by the way, is not trying to get the vote out for President Bush. They're for the other candidate. Either way, though, the stage is already set for havoc on election day and challenges thereafter.
