Over its 28 years in Utah, the Jazz have had many rivals. During the 1990s, Utah and the Houston Rockets became heated conference rivals, often meeting in the NBA Playoffs. And though early in the 90s the Rockets had Utah's number during postseason play, in 1997 the Jazz finally defeated the Rockets in the Western Conference Finals, advancing to the team's first ever NBA Finals. The victory came after John Stockton hit a game winning three as time expired. In 1998, the Jazz and Rockets again would meet, this time in the first round. Utah entered that series tied with the best record in the NBA, held the #1 seed and promptly lost game one to the Rockets.

Despite a new home in Utah, the Jazz did not fare much better. In 1981-82 Utah?s general manager, Frank Layden, assumed the head coaching duties. As general manager, Layden had begun to acquire star players, trading for Adrian Dantley in 1979 and drafting guard Darrell Griffith in 1980 and center Mark Eaton in 1982. As coach, Layden slowly guided the Utah Jazz to the top of the Midwest Division. In 1984 Utah recorded their first winning season, with a 45-37 win-loss mark, and made their first playoff appearance. That Jazz became the first team in NBA history to have four of its players lead the league in a major statistical category: Dantley won the scoring title (averaging 30.6 points per game), Griffith had the league?s best three-point field-goal percentage (36 percent), guard Rickey Green topped the league in steals (2.65 per game), and Eaton led in blocked shots (4.28 per game).

The Jazz, during the first three years in Utah, averaged 16 wins a year and a home attendance of 7,665 per game. There were problems off the court, too. On News Years Day 1980, Bernard King was arrested on five felony sex charges. Five months later, Terry Furlow was dead of a car accident. Cocaine was in his blood. In September 1982, twenty-nine year old forward Bill Robinzine committed suicide.
