Because Usenet groups are frequently used to share large files, servers may have bandwidth and download limits. If you use a commercial service, it may offer a range of limits at different prices.

AOL announced that it would discontinue its integrated Usenet service in early 2005, citing the growing popularity of weblogs, chat forums and on-line conferencing. The AOL community had a tremendous role in popularizing Usenet some 11 years earlier, with all of its positive and negative aspects. This change marked the end of the legendary Eternal September. Others... feel that Google Groups, especially with its new user interface, has picked up the torch that AOL has dropped—and that the so-called Eternal September has yet to end.

Most Internet service providers offer access to Usenet Newsgroups as a standard part of their service. A notable exception to this is America Online, which does not provide a standard Usenet news server. Also, Microsoft Network (MSN) has a news server that requires a special password encryption scheme that is not supported by News Rover.

Bell Sympatico dropped access to Usenet newsgroups on June 6 without warning and with next to no notice. The alternative they proposed at NewHosting.com doesn't work 3 days a week, although perhaps the premium service at $285 / year is better. Rogers closed its use of Usenet last December.

Query your Internet Service Provider to determine whether their servers are members of the Usenet community or whether they provide free access to one of the commercial services that offers access. You may have to seek out your own commercial service because many providers have their own alternative. AOL and MSN have their Communities; AT&T uses Yahoo! Groups.
