A lobbying group that focused on Congress, and was frustrated by the U.S. State Department, was the Boston-based American Anti-Slavery Group (AASG), a group created in 1995. It began its work on Sudan that year by focusing attention on why U.S. African-American Congressmen and other leaders did not take a position on “black African slavery” in Sudan.1494

The U.S. State Department is the lead government agency for developing and implementing foreign policy. In most countries, this agency would be know as the "foreign ministry." The State Department is responsible for issuing passports and offering guidance and assistance for Americans traveling outside the United States. And the department issues visas for non-citizens wishing to visit the United States.

The U.S. State Department updated its Travel Warning detailing ongoing security concerns in Pakistan. The new Travel Warning supersedes the Travel Warning dated Dec. 5, 2006. The Department of State continues to warn U.S. citizens against non-essential travel to Pakistan in light of the threat of terrorist activity. According to the Warning, "The presence of Al-Qaida, Taliban elements, and indigenous sectarian groups poses a potential danger to American citizens, especially along the porous border with Afghanistan. Continuing tensions in the Middle East ... increase the possibility of violence against Westerners in Pakistan. Terrorists and their sympathizers have demonstrated their willingness and capability to attack targets where Americans are known to congregate or visit, such as hotels, clubs and restaurants, places of worship, schools, or outdoor recreation events."

In recent weeks, the U.S. State Department released its 2004 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices. The State Department’s reports have repeatedly criticized the cruel treatment inflicted on detainees by other countries. Many of the tactics described by the State Department are known to have been used by U.S. forces in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere around the world, including hooding, stripping detainees naked, subjecting them to extremes of heat, cold, noise and light, and depriving them of sleep—in violation of U.S. and international laws. There is ... widespread evidence that the U.S. has also sent terrorist suspects to Syria and other countries notorious for their use of torture where suspects are at a grave risk of being tortured. This practice of “rendition” is also banned by international law.
