Tiger Woods led from start to finish, claiming his second US Open title. He won his first US Open championship in 2000. In the end, Woods (-3) won by three strokes over Phil Mickelson (-1), by five over Jeff Maggert ( 2) and by six over Sergio Garcia ( 3). Over the 7,214-yard par 70 Bethpage (Black) Course in Farmingdale, N.Y., Woods' scores were 67-68-70-72--277. He led by one stroke after the first round, then by three after the second round and by four following the third round.

Pinehurst area golf courses have been hosting US Open Golf Championships since 1969, when the famed Pinehurst # 2 course hosted the US Amateur Open. The US Women’s Amateur was held on the same Donald Ross-designed course in 1989.

Kerri Wachtel (Cincinnati, Ohio) was defeated by Cheryl Gudinas Holmes (Lisle, Illinois) in a five game semifinals match in the Choice Hotels US OPEN Racquetball Championships on Saturday. Wachtel won game two 11-5 and game four 11-2. She was defeated 10-12, 10-12 and 9-11 in three down-to-the wire games. In game one, Holmes battled back from a nine point deficit for the win. In the third, she scored seven unanswered points for another come-back victory. Although she lost the match, Wachtel scored nine total points more than Holmes.

The 2004 US Open held August 7-15 in Ft. Lauderdale (Weston), Florida, ended in a 7-way tie for first. GMs Alexander Onischuk, Ildar Ibragimov, Alex Wojtkiewicz, Rodrigo Vasquez, IMs Andranik Matikozyan and Renier Gonzalez plus FM Marcel Martinez each won approximately $1,500 for ther 7 1/2 - 1 1/2 scores. Martinez ... earned a spot n the US Championship as did IM Dmitry Schneider, FM Bruci Lopez and NM Jake Kleiman who finished on 7. WFMs Anna Levina and Olga Sagalchik took the women's qualification spots. Top scorers from the Bay Area were six-time US Champion Walter Browne and IMs John Donaldson and Walter Shipman on 6 1/2.

In 2005, all US Open and US Open Series tennis courts were given blue inner courts and green outer courts to make it easier to see the ball. This change has been met with mixed reactions from both players and fans, with many players saying that the ball is no easier to see with the blue courts.
