Tennis tickets Once known as the U.S. National Championships, the US Open originated as a single men’s tournament held solely for amusement purposes back in 1881. Not long after, women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles ... became a part of the rising annual ritual. When the five major championships were consolidated in 1968, it marked the commencement of the Open Era at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, Queens, N.Y. Now in Flushing Meadows and celebrating its 123rd year, the event has emerged into the richest expert tennis event in the world open to amateurs and professionals.
A major corporate sponsor of The US Open and the US Open Series, the centerpiece of Valspar's sponsorship is the "Valspar Paint Performance Challenge," a full summer-long tennis skills competition held in nine cities during US Open Series events. Tennis enthusiasts got to test their hitting accuracy through a series of on-court targets and had 60 seconds to hit as many targets as possible - 30 seconds for forehand shots and 30 seconds for backhand. The winners of each Challenge were flown to New York to compete in a national playoff for the opportunity to play against the best tennis professionals in the world.

Venus, a US Open winner in 2000 and 2001 is a 6-1 favorite followed by Serena, US Open champion in 1999 and 2002 at 7-1. After a poor 2003 season, both Serena (Australian Open) and Venus (Wimbledon) won Grand Slam events this year and seem to be back in form. Defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova is a 20-1 long shot to repeat.

The USCF held its annual Delegates Meeting the last weekend of the US Open and the Bay Area was represented by newly elected Executive Board member Elizabeth Shaughnessy, NM Richard Koepcke and Mike Goodall. The news was distinctly positive compared to a year ago when the Executive Director failed to show up, then announced his resignation from afar not long after it was discovered that the Federation was near bankruptcy. Today things are much better after an eventful year. The new Executive Director, Bill Goichberg, served without pay, which saved the USCF at least $100,000 (the base pay for ED Al Lawrence in the early 1990s) and negotiated an excellent outsourcing book and equipment deal with Hanon Russell's Chess Cafe. Two of the big questions coming into the Delegates Meetings were would Goichberg continue on and would the USCF stay in their present location. The answer to the former is yes, at a token salary of $25,000. Keeping Goichberg on for another year is critical for the USCF to keep steadying the boat.
