Some hold out hope for a thaw in U.S.-Cuba relations. Democrats took the leadership posts in Congress last week for the first time in more than a decade -- just five months after Fidel Castro temporarily ceded authority to his brother, Raúl Castro.

The issue of U.S.-Cuban relations is being discussed in circles and by groups that have never been involved before. Growing numbers of mainstream corporate leaders, labor union officials, politicians and business associations have begun to take a stand against the trade ban. Nearly 700 companies, trade associations and farm organizations have joined USA Engage in a few years. Members and supporters include the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers, Eastman Kodak, General Motors, Goodyear and Honeywell.

Despite a warm reception for the film, the return chill in U.S.-Cuban relations was felt throughout the festival. On Dec. 31, all cultural exchange and other interest-group travel to Cuba will be prohibited, except by immediate family members of Cuban citizens and humanitarian missions. It's part of the Bush administration's plan to reduce the flow of dollars to Cuba.
