US Airways is cutting its fares on flights between Philadelphia International Airport and San Diego as part of its new low-cost GoFares program. As a way of competing at Philadelphia International with low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines, US Airways has ... cut fares from Philadelphia to Boston, Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Orlando, Fla., Las Vegas; Phoenix, and Providence, R.I. In July, US Airways is also cutting fares from Philadelphia to Houston; Los Angeles; Manchester, N.H.; New Orleans; Raleigh-Durham, N.C., and West Palm Beach, Fla. The cheapest prices are comparable with those offered by Southwest. US Airways, which is the dominant airline at Philadelphia International, created GoFares as a way of trying to maintain its No. 1 position at the airport despite the low fares at Southwest, which began flights out of Philadelphia in May. The cheapest one-way tickets from Philadelphia to San Diego will now be $94, and the most expensive ticket is $499. Previously, walkup fares to San Diego from Philadelphia were $1,286.

In addition to the US Airways Clubs, there is one Envoy Lounge located in Philadelphia International Airport for Envoy Class passengers. The Envoy Lounge includes upgraded amenities including complimentary alcohol. All passengers with an Envoy Class or Star Alliance Business Class ticket are admitted at no charge. US Airways spokesman David Castelveter said his company has every intention of pursuing a new contract with Expedia but didn't shy away from criticizing the site's bargaining methods. He said Expedia increased the price without giving any warning to the Arlington, Va.-based airline, the nation's seventh-largest carrier. He estimated that US Airways depends on Expedia for $280 million in ticket sales each year, or roughly 3 percent of its overall revenue.

Besides operating on schedule, US Airways ... is hoping to make the in-flight experience better next year with new meals on domestic and trans-Atlantic flights. And it's experimenting with a new seat-back entertainment system that would allow customers to pick their own movies to watch during the trip. The system should be ready by spring.
