Consumer groups are hoping that the devastating tornadoes that blew through central Florida last year will encourage the Department of Housing and Urban Development to rethink its guidelines on mobile home construction. While 18 million Americans live in mobile homes, construction standards are considered weak and have not been re-evaluated in the 23 years since they were originally created. The union ... wants warranties to allow residents to get manufacturer's defects corrected no matter what point in the production the process is. Finally, the Consumer Union supports stronger installation regulations so that mobile homes can be more firmly anchored to the ground, decreasing the chance that they will become airborne.
