Ural Mountains
built 478 days ago
Russia is famous for its beautiful winters and exceptional snow conditions, and the Ural Mountains, the traditional boundary between Europe and Asia stretching for over 2400km, are no exception. Renowned as the oldest mountains in the world, the Urals' peaks have been gradually worn down over millions of years into gentle rolling hills - perfect for cross-country skiing. On the eastern side of the range stands the city of Yekaterinburg, known as the cultural centre of the Urals, with its dramatic history and numerous 18th century monuments and monasteries.
The Ural Mountains (Russian: Uralskiy Khrebet) are a mountain range in Russia. They extend from the Arctic Ocean to the border of Kazakhstan, The Urals traditionally form the northern border between Europe and Asia.
The Ural Mountains run roughly north and south through western Russia and Siberia, forming an approximate border between Europe and Asia in the northern portion of the supercontinent of Eurasia. The range extends about 2500 km (1500 miles), starting in northern Kazakhstan and the deserts near the Caspian Sea, running north to the tundra near the Arctic Ocean. Novaya Zemlya, an island, is a continuation of the mountain chain.
The 1995 URSEIS project in the southern Ural Mountains ... highlighted a crustal root beneath the central part of the orogen from wide-angle seismic profiling work (Carbonell et al., 1996). This crustal root was interpreted to be 12-15 km thick. The Moho depth varies between 42 and 45 km to the east and western ends of the URSEIS profile and between 55 and 60 in the centre. The upper mantle P-wave velocities are in the range 8.0-8.2 km/s and S-wave velocities are 4.5-4.7 km/s.

The Ural Mountains extend for more than 2000 km from the Barents Sea in the north to the Caspian Sea in the south and separate the Russian Platform from the West Siberian lowlands (Kruse & McNutt, 1988).(Fig. 3)

The Urals is a common geographical name of the area of Russia around the Ural Mountains. It is a vast territory which includes major cities like Yekaterinburg and Chelyabinsk, as well as parts of the polar areas. The Ural mountains are among the oldest mountains on Earth and are generally not very high, more often looking like large hills, though there are some taller ones, too. Travellers to Urals should not miss Yekaterinburg; usually it is a starting point of any trip to the Urals.
