Upstate New York Transplant Services works with 28 hospitals in the region and other procurement organizations and transplant centers across the country in coordinating organ, eye and tissue donation. The organization is one of only eigh nationwide to offer opportunities for organ, eye and tissue donation. With the addition of the Community Blood Service in June of 2007, the organization has become the first of its kind nationwide.

With the decline of manufacturing in Upstate New York over the last century, the region has suffered a perpetual population loss. Failure to attract young, educated people has begun to put some cities in limbo, threatening their long-term sustainability. This has come to be known as the brain drain: the inability to keep educated people in the area.

SAN FRANCISCO, LinuxWorld Conference & Expo, Aug. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Students in upstate New York have moved one step closer to having a computer at every desk thanks to a pilot program using Linux desktops from Novell on Intel-based computers. Designed to increase student engagement and awareness among students that they are part of a connected global community, the pilot program is aimed at delivering an Internet-connected computer to every student. This new program will significantly increase computing resources at school while still controlling costs. Ultimately, some 80,000 students in the Rome City School District and other schools supported by the Madison Oneida Regional Information Center could benefit. As a result, students will gain technology skills and a new research tool that will improve their learning experience.

That massive natural gas explosion cost New York nearly all of its political leadership, and started a cycle of regional blame and retribution that continues to accelerate.
