Unreal Tournament, abbreviated UT, is a family of popular first-person shooter video game. It began as Digital Extremes' and Epic Games' 1999 follow-up title to Unreal and focuses mainly on multiplayer action. As with the original Unreal, the ease with which players can create and release mods to the core game is a key factor contributing to UT's longevity. UT improved upon the mod-friendly nature of its predecessor with support for mutators such as Sniper Arena, Instagib, BunnyTracks, MonsterHunt, Jailbreak and more. Further, UT clans, or gaming teams, and a score of UT dedicated clan and fan community sites continue to sustain Unreal Tournament's popularity years after its initial release. Nali Castle flyby on Voodoo Graphics Unreal's method of creating maps differs in major ways from that of Quake. The bundled UnrealEd map editor uses the Unreal engine to accurately render the exact scene, as opposed to external editors like Worldcraft attempting to recreate it with different methods. Whereas Quake maps are compiled from a variety of different components, Unreal maps are inherently editable on the fly. This allows anybody to edit any map that is created, including the originals from the developers. Though UnrealEd loads quite a bit slower than most map editors, it runs maps smoothly and swiftly: hitting rebuild automatically finalizes the level within minutes (or even within seconds, on a modern day computer), as opposed to the hours or (at the time) even days with a full Quake map compile.
Unreal Tournament began life as an expansion pack for Unreal. When it was realized that the multi-player aspect of Unreal was popular and something that people sought after, Epic began working on a multiplayer expansion pack for the game to fix the problems with online play. At some point during its development, it became clear that the number and extent of the changes to the Unreal codebase that Epic was required to make made Unreal Tournament too incompatible with Unreal. Thus the expansion pack was broken off from Unreal and made into a standalone game. Unreal Tournament contains all of the content that Unreal had except for the maps and music.
On February 11, 2004, the game demo for Unreal Tournament 2004 was made available for download over the Internet. Within a few hours of its release it had become one of the most popular online games. The full version was made available on March 18, 2004 and could be purchased as either six CDs, one DVD, or on two DVDs (containing both the game and an extra disc of bonus content) as part of the "Special Edition" release (which was completely sold-out in a very short space of time - There were only 60,000 copies made for global distribution). It was later released on 13 April 2004, as a DVD Edition containing both of the Special Edition DVDs, but without the metal box covering & headset. It expanded on the team-based theme of its predecessor with the reintroduction of Assault (last seen in Unreal Tournament), the addition of a new gametype called Onslaught, and the inclusion of several futuristic vehicles. The game featured built-in voice-comms and contained over one hundred separate maps, many of which were carried over from Unreal Tournament 2003.
The Unreal mission pack will supposedly be updated with the latest Unreal code when Epic releases a new, official patch. Although this was stated last year Legend may still update Return to Na Pali accordingly. If/when this occurs rest assured this guide will be compatible with it.
