  1. Viruses (Malicious Software) -- Viruses And Worms
Viruses and worms are a common problem in the computing world today. It seems every other day a new virus or worm comes out, and anti-virus vendors must quickly update their signatures to block the new outbreak. 2. Viruses (Malicious Software) -- Macro Viruses
Viruses, worms, and trojan horses are the biggest threats to personal computer security. Virus protection is a necessity for everyone that owns or uses a computer. While PCs have more problems with viruses, the advent of macro viruses means Macintoshes are vulnerable as well.
  3. Viruses (Malicious Software) -- Programs
Fred Cohen has proven mathematically that perfect detection of unknown viruses is impossible: no program can look at other programs and say either "a virus is present" or "no virus is present", and always be correct. But, in the real world, most new viruses are sufficiently like old viruses that the same sort of scanning that finds known viruses ... finds the new ones. And there are a large number of heuristic tricks that anti-virus programs use to detect new viruses, based either on how they look, or what they do. These heuristics are only sometimes successful, but since brand-new viruses are comparatively rare, they are sufficient to the purpose.
  4. Ebola -- Ebola Virus
Bioterrorism, or use of the Ebola virus as a biological weapon, is a common fear of people who know about the virus. There is not much information published about the bioterrorism potential of Ebola, obviously for security reasons. However, scientists do say that altering the Ebola virus for biological warfare is possible although unlikely. The difficulty in changing Ebola to a potential virus is twofold: first, the Ebola virus would have to be airborne to be effective. Although some have noted that Ebola can travel through water droplets in the air (Preston 260), it is currently not possible for Ebola to travel through the air by itself (Russell). Second, the Ebola virus would have to be transported in a way that is not fatal to the people who use it as a weapon, or would have to be carried by people who are willing to die a gruesome death.
  5. Viruses (Malicious Software)
Viruses, worms, Trojans and all sorts of malware are among the most common and insidious threats today. They can crash entire networks and cause millions of dollars in losses. Come here for news and advice about the latest outbreaks and attacks.
  6. Viruses (Malicious Software) -- Worms
Viruses and spyware present a daily challenge to an IT professional dealing with security. Here's how to combat them. 7. West Nile Virus -- Diseases
The risk West Nile virus poses to pets is very small. Elderly and young dogs, and those with compromised immune systems could be at higher risk. Pets have been exposed, but they have not fallen ill in great numbers. Cases of infection causing disease in pets are very rare and likely only in immunocompromised animals.
  8. Computer Viruses -- Files
Viruses can be transmitted as attachments to an e-mail note, as downloads, or present on a diskette or CD downloaded onto your computer. The individual providing the e-mail note, downloaded file, or diskette is often unaware of the virus. Some viruses take effect immediately; other viruses lie dormant until circumstances cause the code to be executed by the computer. Some viruses are annoying in intent and effect and some can be quite harmful, erasing data or causing your hard disk to require reformatting. In either case, computer virus infections should not go untreated and they can be prevented.
  9. West Nile Virus -- Birds
West Nile Virus (WNV) is a virus that is spread by infected mosquitoes. The virus usually infects birds, but it can be spread to humans by mosquitoes that feed on infected birds and then bite humans. The virus cannot be spread by person-to-person contact.
  10. West Nile Virus -- United States
    - West Nile Virus is a reportable disease in the state of Illinois. The Illinois Department of Agriculture should be contacted (217/782-4944) when the disease is suspected or confirmed in domestic animals, poultry, or wild animals in captivity.
