Univision: Univision Network
built 633 days ago
Univision's campaign — "Una Nueva Era: Television Digital" (A New Era: Digital Television) — will air ads on its Univision and TeleFutura TV networks and Univision Radio. It ... will include a Web page, 30-minute TV specials, local newscasts, local outreach events and a toll-free hotline Univision is setting up with the FCC and the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration.
In 2001, Univision acquired USA Broadcasting, the station group of USA Networks, which included 13 full-power television stations which are listed below. Most of these stations became part of a new network called TeleFutura. Others joined Univision.
CEO A. Jerrold Perenchio bought control of Univision in 1992 from Hallmark Cards Inc. for $550 million, and quickly rebuilt it to tap into the booming Hispanic market. Total spending by U.S. Hispanics, estimated at $411 billion last year, is expected to grow 30% in the next 10 years. Perenchio, 69, who now owns 22% of Univision's shares, ramped up programming, producing a Spanish version of Sesame Street and beefing up news and sports. His team of new execs inked long-term deals with Mexican media giant Televisa and Venezuela's Venevision to give Univision three hours a night of their tear-jerking novellas. To keep teens tuned in, they added youth-oriented soaps. Says Merrill Lynch analyst Jessica Reif Cohen: ''They listen to their audience better than any network around.''
Spanish-speaking Americans have a singular vision when it comes to watching TV -- Univision Communications. The company owns and operates more than 60 TV stations in the US and Puerto Rico offering a variety of news, sports, and entertainment programming. Its Univision Network, which is ... carried by more than 1,700 cable affiliates, reaches about 99% of US Hispanic households. The company also operates a smaller broadcast network, TeleFutura, and cable network Galavisión, while its Univision Radio division boasts about 70 stations. Founded in 1961 as Spanish International Network, Univision was acquired in 2007 by a group of private investment firms led by TPG Capital and Thomas H. Lee Partners.

Univision will hardly miss the Web-ad revenues. It's adding lots of younger TV viewers while the big networks are losing them. That has helped it sell $425 million worth of ads for this season's programs--42% more than last year, and more than triple the growth rate of the big networks. Univision's 1999 operating earnings should rise by 50%, to $197.2 million, on 16% higher sales of $671 million, estimates analyst Niraj A. Gupta of Schroder & Co. Investors responded by nearly tripling Univision's stock price in the past year, to about 100.
As a subsidiary of Univisa, Galavision had not been included in the sale of SIN to Hallmark, but it was acquired by Univision in July 1996. This cable network was offering such attractions as classic movies, original series, and exclusive rights to sporting events, including baseball's Caribbean World Series and Mexican League soccer championship games. Galavision, in 1997, was reaching about 2.5 million of the 4.4 million Hispanic households wired for cable service on more than 370 U.S. cable systems. After the parent company joined with Home Shopping Network to form Spanish Shopping Network in 1997, Galavision began carrying its offerings.
