Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia. The cornerstone of its first building was laid on October 6, 1817, in the presence of three presidents of the United States--Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. In 1825, the university admitted its first scholars, who were educated in what Jefferson called "useful sciences." Following Jefferson's beliefs, the university was nonsectarian and allowed its students to choose their own courses of study. The honor system was established in 1842. In 1987, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) named the original grounds, Thomas Jefferson's "academical village," to its prestigious World Heritage List.

The University of Virginia announced last week that it would guarantee admission to all qualified students from the state's community colleges, as part of an effort to make itself more accessible to a wider range of students. The offer would allow students from the 23 community colleges to enroll in the university's College of Arts and Sciences, its largest school. The plan is notable because the university is one of the top public institutions in the country, and admission there has become increasingly competitive in recent years.

The student life building on the University of Virginia is called Newcomb Hall. Residents of Iowa City, home to the UNIVERSITY OF IOWA, have submitted a ballot measure that would kick anyone under 21 out of the city's bars after 10 p.m. The measure appears on the ballot Nov. 6. At the University of Iowa, Republicans and Democrats alike have been conducting nonpartisan voter registration drives and setting up voting stations in the residence halls. Even students at other schools, many of whom travel to Iowa City to drink, are speaking out. The result, if the organization effort works, is that more young people than usual will be registered to vote in Iowa on Nov. 6 and during the caucuses. This could be good news for Obama.
