The consortium's decision mirrors those made in recent months by a number of universities, including Cornell and the University of Missouri, each of which have opted not to enter new agreements with Elsevier. Other universities are thinking along the same lines. Locally, N.C. State's faculty senate adopted a resolution in December urging its campus to stand up to restrictive offers such as the one put forward by Elsevier.

The Iowa Court of Appeals has upheld the third-degree sexual abuse conviction of a UNIVERSITY OF IOWA teaching assistant. In today's ruling, the court rejected Frederick Williams' claims that he received ineffective counsel during his trial. Williams, who was ... convicted of indecent exposure, was sentenced up to 10 years in prison. Williams was charged in 2002. A University of Iowa professor whose nickname is "the Yoda of voting" has been hired as a consultant by one Florida county hoping to avoid another presidential election debacle this November. DOUGLAS JONES, an assistant professor of computer science, has emerged in recent years as a national expert on computer election systems and security. To that end, election officials in south Florida's Miami-Dade County asked for his help as they work to implement a controversial, $25 million touch-screen, paperless voting system. Researchers prepared PAC-rich fractions from whole cranberry extract and worked with scientists at the University of Wisconsin to characterize their structures. They tested the fractions against eight tumor cell lines and screened for the effect on tumor growth. The fractions inhibited the proliferation of the tumor cell lines without inhibiting the growth of normal embryonic mouse cells.

With the Dec. 31, 2003 contract expiration looming, local university librarians spent a good part of the last year negotiating with Elsevier in hopes of getting a better package deal. It didn't work. Elsevier, several local university librarians and administrators say, insisted that the consortium agree to a package deal -- known as a bundle -- in which the four universities would have electronic access to a set collection of journals.
