The Chicago Headline Club's Ethics in Journalism Award was presented during the first Ethics in Journalism Week, which the Society of Professional Journalists plans to sponsor annually during the last week of April. The Chicago Headline Club is the largest chapter of SPJ, a volunteer organization dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior.

Ada Skyles is Associate Director and a Research Fellow at the Chapin Hall Center for Children at the University of Chicago. Since 1997, she has been the Chair of the Ethics Board for Child Welfare Professionals of the Office of Inspector General, Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. In this capacity, Ms. Skyles has conducted numerous workshops and presentations on ethical issues in child welfare practice and management. At Chapin Hall, her work focuses on child welfare systems and the experiences of children of color in those systems. Her legal practice has included an emphasis on family law. She has taught at the schools of social work, medicine, and law for the University of Wisconsin–Madison and was coeditor of a special issue of Children & Youth Services Review, focusing on the disproportionate representation of children of color in child welfare systems.

The University of Chicago is principally located seven miles south of downtown Chicago, in the neighborhoods of Hyde Park and Woodlawn. The campus is bisected by Frederick Law Olmsted's Midway Plaisance, a large linear park created for the 1893 World's Fair. The bulk of the campus, including the Main Quadrangle, is located north of the Midway, while several of the professional schools are located south of the Midway. The university's campus is noted for its neo-Gothic architecture, which was constructed entirely out of limestone in the late 19th century, and is complemented by the Main Quandrangles' status as a botanical garden. The buildings of the original quadrangles were deliberately patterned after the layouts of Oxford University and Cambridge University. Mitchell Tower, for example, is a smaller-sized reproduction of Oxford's Magdalen Tower,[5] and the University Commons, Hutchinson Hall, is a duplicate of Oxford's Christ Church Hall.[6]
