The Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a new industry-wide standard that will eventually replace the hassle of connecting parallel and serial devices to your computer. With USB, you don't need to worry about selecting the correct serial or parallel port, installing expansion cards, configuring the myriad of dip switches, IRQ (interrupt) settings, DMA (Direct Memory Access) channels, I/O (Input/Output) addresses, or the getting the correct settings for the device's software drivers. USB is Plug & Play with a twist, you never have to turn off the computer to connect or disconnect a device. You have virtually unlimited expansion capabilities without ever having to remove the cover off the computer. USB has an industry standard, one-size-fits-all connector that allows you to install and remove devices without opening the computer. Since this connector is hot swappable, you do not have to turn off the computer.

USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a new external bus developed by Intel, Compaq, DEC, IBM, Microsoft, NEC and Northern Telcom and released to the public in 1996 with the Intel 430HX Triton II Mother Board. USB has the capability of transferring 12 Mbps, supporting up to 127 devices and only utilizing one IRQ. For PC computers to take advantage of USB, the user must be running Windows 95 OSR2, Windows 98 or Windows 2000. Linux users ... have the capability of running USB with the proper support drivers installed. To determine if your computer supports USB on the back, front or sides of the computer, look for a small connector with the below symbol.

Universal Serial Bus, or USB, is an external bus standard that supports data transfer rates of 12 Mbps. A single USB port can be used to connect up to 127 peripheral devices, such as mice, modems, and keyboards. USB ... supports Plug-and-Play installation and hotplugging.

Universal Serial Bus 1.0, the first edition, was released in January 1996. It supported 1.5 Mbps (low speed) and 12 Mbps (high speed) transfer rates. Note that this is Megabits per second and not MegaBytes per second -- a common misunderstanding. A percentage of this data rate is reserved for USB protocol overhead, so the actual data transfer is less than the indicated speed. How much less depends on the transfer type and the packet sizes.

A 4 port USB hub. This hub is powered by the bus The Universal Serial Bus was created about ten years ago. This new technology became an instant success. Ever since USB was introduced different producers of electronic devices thought about the future of the bus. It can provide connection to the computer and other devices like for example laptops and MP3 players.
