Leonide Massine's one act ballet, Union Pacific, was the first ballet based on the folklore of the Americas to be created by an international company. Set to a libretto by American poet Archibald MacLeish, it was first performed by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo on 6 April 1934 at Philadelphia's Forrest Theatre. The score was based on American folk songs of the 1860s, composed and arranged by Nicholas Nabokov, with scenery designed by Albert Johnson and costumes by Irene Sharaff. Dancers at the premiere included Massine, Tamara Toumanova, Eugenia Delarova, Sono Osato and André Eglevsky.

Union Pacific is a train-themed stock market game. On each turn, players must choose between expanding a company to increase its value and adding a share of stock to their hand, or playing stock onto the table from their hand to increase their ownership of one or two companies. There are four semi-random scoring events, in which the first and second place share holder in each company are paid dividends. Only stock that has been previously played onto the table is considered during the scoring rounds. Union Pacific is a special company whose shares are claimed according to special rules. Union Pacific is not represented on the board but instead pays dividends to all share holders according to a fixed progression chart.

While Union Pacific service to Chetek and Bloomer shippers wasn’t in jeopardy, they will benefit immediately from expanded service. David Ziarnik, production manager at Automated Building Components (ABC), a wood roof and floor truss manufacturer in Chetek, provides a striking case for the benefits of reliable rail service. He said ABC’s shipping costs would increase from $250,000 to $400,000 annually if the company had to rely solely on truck transportation.

The scale model of the Union Pacific’s “Big Boy” 4002 was built in Los Angeles in the early 1940s by Alfred Herman, a prominent Academy Award-nominated art director, whose career began in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Built shortly after the “Big Boy” entered into service with Union Pacific, this particular model by Mr. Herman is believed to be the earliest model of the “Big Boy” locomotive. This one-of-a-kind model exhibits the painstaking detail and superb workmanship that are evident in all of Mr. Herman’s work.

Union Pacific is unique in that it is strongly committed to research to understand not only the effectiveness of intervention strategies in reducing risk factors, but ... employee’s acceptance of various interventions. This focus on research is rare in corporate America, but one that makes sense for a mature workforce.
