Uniforms: Companies
built 293 days ago
The Lynchburg newspaper of the period gives occasional clues as to how these uniforms were procured and manufactured. In the year and a half between Brown's raid and the acceptance of the Lynchburg companies into Virginia (and hence Confederate) service, the citizens became very adept at providing for their volunteers. According to the following quotes from the Lynchburg Daily Virginian, an effective cottage industry emerged to outfit the companies:
Andrzej Frankowski runs one of a handful of companies in Poland that make replicas of Nazi uniforms -- a business one wouldn't expect to spring up in a country subjected to six years of Nazi occupation. He sells mainly to film companies and history buffs - but some fear that uniforms he offers may be falling into the hands of far-right extremists. They ... make related paraphernalia, including armbands saying "Der Fuehrer." He said the uniforms he makes - some 5,000 annually - include replicas of British, Polish, Russian and U.S. army wear and are used in films and historical re-enactments. A complete uniform sells for about $820.
Clients can request a variety of uniforms, such as: lingerie, bikinis, Capri pants, camisoles and mini skirts. Valet Girls parks cars at parties for the rich and famous, including George Burns, Dennis Hopper, Frank Zappa and Senator Hillary Clinton. The company ... provided parking services for Arnold Schwarzenegger's 40th birthday bash and Bob Hope's 90th birthday party.
