In Sweden unemployment benefits are divided into a voluntary scheme with income related compensation up to a certain level and a comprehensive scheme that provides a lower level of basic support. The voluntary scheme requires a minimum of 12 months membership and a certain degree of employment during that time before any claims can be made. Employers pay a fee on top of the pre-tax income of their employees, which together with membership fees, fund the scheme (see Unemployment funds in Sweden).

If the supplemental unemployment benefits repayment is $3,000 or less claim a tax deduction on Line 36 of Form 1040 and to the left write "subpay TRA". If the supplemental unemployment benefits repayment is greater than $3,000 you can take a tax deduction on Line 27 of Form 1040, Schedule A or claim a tax credit on your tax return. The tax deduction on your tax return is not subject to the 2% AGI floor.

In a third report, the Labor Department said that the number of newly laid off workers filing applications for unemployment benefits rose to 311,000 last week, an increase of 15,000. But even with the gain, claims remain at a level indicating a healthy labor market.

The Labor Department said the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose to 397,000 in the week ended Jan. 25 from a revised 383,000 the prior week. Economists, on average, expected 385,000 new claims, according to Briefing.com.
