On an edition of Raw is War in late 1998 The Undertaker "crucified" Steve Austin on a giant version of his symbol. Austin was tied to the structure and it was then set on fire and was raised high in the arena. Many people were offended by the incident but it soon died down.

Early in 1999, Undertaker recruited the Acolytes, The Brood, Mideon & Viscera to form the Ministry of Darkness. They targeted Mr. McMahon and the Corporation, with Stephanie McMahon being Undertaker’s ultimate target. The war between Undertaker and the McMahons led to the Deadman defeating Big Boss Man in a Hell in a Cell Match at WrestleMania XV; soon after, the two groups patched up their differences and merged into one super group, and Undertaker defeated Steve Austin for his third WWE Championship in May 1999.

With Kane injured, Undertaker began targeting Steve Austin and his WWF Championship. On an episode of RAW, Undertaker was told by police officers that his wife Sara had been involved in a car accident. Undertaker arrived home, only to find out that it was all a set up by Austin. At Judgment Day 2001, Undertaker lost to Austin after Triple H interfered with his sledgehammer, allowing Austin to pin Undertaker and retain the championship.
