Following WrestleMania 21, Undertaker took a two month hiatus from wrestling, linked to the birth of his second daughter with wife Sara, Gracie Calaway, in late May 2005. He returned for the June 30 episode of SmackDown! in the SmackDown! Championship six-way elimination match. However, he was met by Muhammad Hassan, who tried to use a chair on him. He took the chair and hit Hassan instead, getting disqualified.

At Sunday Night Heat the Undertaker chokeslammed X-Pac, which resulted in a challenge for a match at Raw is War the next night. But before the match really got started Kane made his way to ringside and tried to blast the Undertaker with a fireball, but he avoided it and X-Pac took the full blow. Kane then chased Undertaker out of the arena.

Following SummerSlam, Undertaker began stalking Michaels, leading up to the first-ever Hell in a Cell Match at Badd Blood. As it seemed that the Deadman was set to win the match, Kane made his WWE Debut, attacking his brother and costing him the match. Undertaker originally refused to fight his brother, but changed his mind at the 1998 Royal Rumble.

About 5 months after the Undertaker "died" at Royal Rumble Ted Dibiase began claiming on WWF television that he had the Undertaker. Paul Bearer came out weeks later and said he had the Undertaker and that Dibiase that lying. A match was signed for Summerslam 1994 for the two Undertakers to fight each other to see how actually had the real one.

The Undertaker's feud continued with Mankind In Your House: Buried Alive. This event debuted the Buried Alive Match, in which Undertaker defeated Mankind. The match ... introduced The Executioner who attacked Undertaker after the buried alive match. Undertaker also defeated Mankind later in 1996 at Survivor Series, but The Executioner beat Undertaker down so he couldn't get hold of Bearer. The In Your House: It's Time event saw the end of the feud with Mankind and The Executioner with a victory for The Undertaker.

Following his return to SmackDown, Undertaker took on all comers, but was forced to leave Paul Bearer behind. Eventually, he found himself as the top contender to WWE Champion JBL, and the two met at SummerSlam. JBL won the match by disqualification, but the rivalry was only beginning.
