With all that said, the emergence of Unclaimed Money web sites have appeared on the Internet hoping to gain from such. Some are legit and do offer a valuable service and information to assist one in locating an unclaimed or lost asset. However, many offer a useless, misleading and costly service especially those that market themselves as “FREE” and “INSTANT” searches.

Check the IRD’s Unclaimed Money list to see if the money has been transferred to the IRD. If it has, follow the IRD’s procedures for making a claim. If not, you will need to check with the bank or financial institution.

The records in the Unclaimed Moneys online database include all funds lodged since 1 July 1997, which are equal to or greater than $20. Prior to 1 July 1997, Unclaimed Moneys records were kept as hard copy under the name of the lodging organisation.

There is another site that is an excellent resource for finding unclaimed money. It is ... endorsed by NAUPA. It is called, Missing Money and it is a great resource that accesses all of the state’s databases by simply entering a name and state. You can also choose to search through all states for the widest results possible. You can visit Missing Money here: Missing Money, It is free to search and the site returns enough information that you should feel comfortable claiming your lost money. For example, not only does the search return the results for your selected name, but it also gives the last known address, as well as the name of the company or organization that has the unclaimed money.
