Each Umbrella comes with a 6V Krypton Bulb located at the base of the canopy. Ingeniously, it retracts when the umbrella is closed. At 21", it's reflective and illuminating. It's housing is water resistant. Each umbrella is delivered with an extra bulb and can be illuminated for 3 hours on a single set of batteries. These batteries (4xAA), are set in the handle.

Due to the series of disasters plaguing the company, and the ongoing legal proceedings against them, Umbrella's stock prices plummeted. By the early 21st century, the Umbrella Corporation's financial ruin was nearly absolute, but the corporation was not finished yet. Umbrella retained one last major stronghold, a main base of operations located in southern Russia. Following Spencer's disappearance, this nightmarish facility was placed under the leadership of Sergei Vladimir, and now housed the U.M.F.-013, a supercomputer containing all of the company's data.

Birkin and Wesker used this as a diversion for their own plans to leave Umbrella, taking their research with them. Wesker, having formed Raccoon Police Department's (R.P.D.) elite S.T.A.R.S. two years earlier, would develop a plan to lure the unit to the Arklay Research Facility to obtain battle data from the conflict that would follow with the S.T.A.R.S. members and various Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W.). Of the two S.T.A.R.S. teams, the first to be deployed was Bravo Team, and it was Bravo Team's Rebecca Chambers's and Billy Coen's intervention that eventually stopped Marcus' plans for revenge within the Arklay Training Facility, resulting in the facility's destruction.

The first generation Neuronet network is slated to go live in 2007 through the interconnection of regional VR and gaming R&D consortiums being formed under the IAVRT umbrella in metro markets worldwide. Consumer-accessible applications will follow as early as 2009. IAVRT is initiating the pre-registration of Neuronet domain names. A Sunrise period for holders of trademarks and other prior rights is being offered from February 5, 2007 to June 1, 2007 and domain name registration is open to everyone June 4, 2007. Neuronet domains are not compatible with the Internet, nor will Internet domains be compatible with the Neuronet. The Internet was not designed to support the data transmission requirements of real-time VR data so the Neuronet is being created as a separate and distinct network.

The collapsible umbrella is said to have been invented during Cao Wei in ancient China, roughly 1,700 years ago. The Chinese character for umbrella is 傘 (sǎn) and is a pictograph resembling the modern umbrella in design. Some investigators have supposed that its invention was first created by tying large leaves to bough-like ribs (the branching out parts of an umbrella). Others assert that the idea was probably derived from the tent, which remains in form unaltered to the present day. However, the tradition existing in China is that it originated in standards and banners waving in the air, hence the use of the umbrella was often linked to high ranking (though not necessarily royalty in China). On one occasion at least, twenty-four umbrellas were carried before the Emperor when he went out hunting.
