Ulysses

Ulysses is buried at Grant's Tomb in New York City. Grant's Tomb is the largest burial vault in America. It is located in Riverside Park overlooking the Hudson River. On the front of the tomb Ulysses' words, "Let us have peace," are carved over the entrance. In 1959, the National Park Service took over the operation of Grant's Tomb. It is called the General Grant National Memorial and is still known as Grant's Tomb.

Ulysses was launched from a Space Shuttle, with a solid-fuel booster accelerating it to Jupiter. The booster consisted of a two-stage Boeing IUS (Inertial Upper Stage), plus a McDonnell Douglas PAM-S (Payload Assist Module-Special) on a 70 rpm spin table. On leaving Earth, the spacecraft became the fastest ever artificially-accelerated object; the New Horizons probe has since set the new record.

Ulysses is ... remembered in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in California. These parks are home to the giant sequoias which are the largest living things on earth. A grove within Kings Canyon is called Grant Grove and contains a tree named after Ulysses. It is called The General Grant Tree. The General Grant Tree is The Nation's Christmas Tree and a living National Shrine in memory of Americans who have died in war.

In each of the texts in which Ulysses/Odysseus appears, whether the representation of him is negative or positive, the intent behind representing him that way revolves around human virtue and honor. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is honorable and virtuous because he has the ability to live through attacks on him that come from even the gods. The qualities that enable him to do that are ... judged as positive because they attain a positive outcome. Dante, instead, focuses on the process and actions Odysseus takes to gain what he wants (contrasted with what he needs). The wrath thrown upon him by the gods during his life, then by God in Inferno, was caused by Ulysses' actions, his presumption, his tactics. As such, his characteristics were no longer positive, but echoed of disaster.

The Ulysses mission is a joint mission with NASA and ESA to explore the solar environment at high ecliptic latitudes. It was launched 6 October 1990, and reached Jupiter for its "gravitational slingshot" in February 1992. It passed the south solar pole in June 1994 and crossed the ecliptic equator in February 1995. In addition to its solar environment instruments, Ulysses ... carries plasma instruments to study the interstellar and Jovian regions, as well as two instruments for studying X-rays and gamma-rays of both solar and cosmic origins.

Ulysses is another outlet for the pop-tastic songwriting skills of Robert Schneider. The group was formed in 2003 in Kentucky, where Schneider had relocated after taking a break from his long-running band, the Apples in Stereo. There he recruited members of the group Big Fresh and came up with Ulysses. While Schneider's voice makes the tunes seem somewhat familiar, the approach here is less baroque pop and more chunky indie rock.
