At the outbreak of the Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant was working at this father's leather shop in Illinois. He was appointed by the Illinois governor as the commander of a local militia, but soon rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the Civil War. Grant's aggressive and bold tactics were a major reason why the Union Army was able to defeat the Confederates. His campaigns in the Mississippi River valley were legendary and crucial to Union victory. In 1862, Grant led his forces to victories at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in Tennessee. At Fort Donelson, Grant earned the nickname "Unconditional Surrender Grant".

Ulysses S. Grant lived on a frontier with his family. He was born in Hiram. Grant’s father Jesse Root Grant was a tanner. His mother was a pious, hardworking women on the frontier. At about the age of 14, his father moved him nearby Georgetown, where he attended school there. Ulysses ... went to Maysville Seminary in Maysville, Kentucky, and the Presbyterian Academy in Ripley, Ohio.

Ulysses S. Grant was actually born Hiram Ulysses Grant, but due to an error by the congressman who submitted his name to West Point, Grant's name was listed as "Ulysses S. Grant" on the academy registers when Grant entered West Point. Rather than contest it, Grant simply changed his name. He often said that the "S" stood for "Nothing". Senior cadets at West Point jokingly assumed the U.S. Grant on the roles stood for "Uncle Sam" Grant and this West Point nickname, "Sam", stuck with Grant for the rest of his life. His wife... always called him "Ulyss", "Lyss", or "Mr. Grant".

Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822, in Point Pleasant, Ohio and spent his childhood working on his father’s farm. In 1839, Grant was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Upon graduating from West Point in 1843, Grant served in the U.S. Army at various posts throughout the United States. Grant served in the Mexican War, participating in several battles including Palo Alto, Cerro Gordo, Molino del Rey and Chapultepec. After the Mexican War, Grant resigned his commission in the Army and moved to St. Louis, Missouri to farm. In April 1861, he moved to Galena, Illinois where he worked as a clerk in his father and brother’s leather shop.

Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822, in Point Pleasant, Ohio, 25 miles east of Cincinnati. The Grant family trace their ancestry back to Matthew Grant who landed in Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. Over the next two centuries eight generations of the family moved west through Pennsylvania and Kentucky to Ohio. Ulysses' great grandfather was killed in action during the French and Indian War and his grandfather fought at Bunker Hill. At the time of Ulysses' birth, his father, Jesse Root Grant, operated a successful tannery in Point Pleasant. Ulysses' mother, Hannah had married Jesse on June 24, 1821, and Ulysses was their first child.
