Launched in October1990, Ulysses will explore the Sun's polar regions. It has an orbit which swings far from the ecliptic plane, giving it a unique vantage point from which to study the sun. It measures radio frequency emissions produced by energetic electrons ejected by the sun. These electrons follow the magnetic field lines from the sun, and their interactions with the plasma of the solar wind generate radio emissions called Type III radio bursts.
Ulysses faced censorship when it was published in the U.S. in The Little Review. Would you ever support banning a literary work, a speech, an advertisement, a television program, a movie, etc.? Examples: an advertisement for pornography in a daily newspaper, a scheduled speech at a university that advocates a racist point of view, a TV news program showing terrorists torturing a captive American soldier, an essay published in the U.S. that advocates the violent overthrow of the American government, a top-secret government document that identifies by name covert American intelligence agents in foreign countries, a magazine article that explains in detail how to construct an atomic bomb.
[T]his particular clarification of the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle appears to be the central point of ULYSSES, if not the *only* point, since the episode itself was short on substance. All the rest -- the fights, the pirates, the fights, Poseidon, the fights, the Sirens, the fights -- was window dressing. Where RETURN OF CALLISTO was flawed by an attempt to cover waaay too much material in one episode, ULYSSES suffered from not having nearly enough to say. It might have made a solid thirty-minute story, but at forty-plus minutes the "Xena falls in love" plot was stretched rather thin.
