Ulysses Simpson Grant was the son of a frontier family. He was born Hiram Ulysses Grant on April 27, 1822, in a two-room cabin in Point Pleasant in southwestern Ohio. His father, Jesse Root Grant, was a tanner. Hannah Simpson Grant, his mother, was a pious, hardworking frontier woman. When Ulysses was one year old, his father moved the family to nearby Georgetown, where the boy grew up and attended school. He later went to nearby Maysville Seminary in Maysville, Kentucky, and the Presbyterian Academy in Ripley, Ohio.

Ulysses S. Grant was born Hiram Ulysses Grant. At Ulysses' birth, his family had not decided on what to name him. Eventually, each member of the family wrote a name on a piece of paper and dropped it into a hat. They drew the name Hiram Ulysses Grant from the hat, and that became his name. He was known as Ulysses to his family and friends.

Ulysses Simpson Grant was born (as Hiram Ulysses Grant) at Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27, 1822. He graduated from West Point in 1843 and served without particular distinction in the Mexican War. In 1848 he married Julia Dent. He resigned from the army in 1854, after warnings from his commanding officer about his drinking habits, and for the next six years held a wide variety of jobs in the Middle West. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he sought a command and soon, to his surprise, was made a brigadier general. His continuing successes in the western theaters, culminating in the capture of Vicksburg, Miss., in 1863, brought him national fame and soon the command of all the Union armies.

Ulysses attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. When Ulysses registered, his name appeared on West Point's records as Ulysses Simpson Grant, rather than Hiram Ulysses Grant. So, Ulysses changed his name to Ulysses Simpson Grant. He was known as U.S. Grant or "Uncle Sam" Grant. His good friends shortened this name and called him Sam.

His father, Jesse Root Grant, born January 23, 1794, near Greensburg, Pennsylvania, was a tanner and made a great deal of money. His mother, Hannah Simpson Grant was born November 23, 1798, in Montgomery, Pennsylvania. He was born Hiram Ulysses Grant, and became known as Ulysses Simpson Grant when U. S. Congressman Thomas L. Hammer of Ohio mistakenly erred on his application in securing Grants admission to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1839.
