Ultima Online: Games

Ultima Online is an extremely addicting game, especially since it is possible to become part of an online community. Player run guilds and towns, and even larger cities are becoming a common occurrence. Unfortunately though, as with many online games, technical problems tend to hinder gameplay. Complaints about bugs and rampant player killing are frequent on newsgroups and several web pages but Origin, for the most part, has been responsive to feedback, and updates the game via online patches. Customer service at Origin... seems to be notoriously bad and this is an issue that will definitely need fixing in the near future.

The most controversial aspect of Ultima Online is their player vs. player combat system. Initially, they created a world where people could kill each other wherever they saw fit, so long as it was outside town. There was a sort of justice system, where murderers could be flagged and hunted, but ultimately it was too daunting for the average player in the eyes of the developers. Thus, a mirror universe was created where players could fight endlessly, while player killing was forbidden in the original world. This segregation has become famously unpopular among the original players of the game, who still lament the loss of "old school UO PvP".

Ultima Online is, of course, an Internet-only game, but to date it has done largely a poor job at handling the finicky nature of the Internet. As a result, lag seriously limits the game's enjoyment and, at times, renders the game virtually unplayable. During peak hours (6-12pm), lag is often so bad that your character will be unable to walk more than a few steps without pausing, even if you have relatively speedy Internet access. Simple tasks, such as moving inventory items or talking with other characters, become tedious exercises in frustration, and combat occasionally becomes an uncontrollable nightmare. Origin can't be held responsible for the nature of the Internet, but Ultima Online was designed from its outset to be played exclusively over the Internet and it should do a better job of coping with lag. Other online games handle lag more effectively, and Ultima Online's inability to provide a consistently playable experience is its greatest flaw.

Ultima Online has seen many major revisions throughout its history. This includes gameplay revisions, staff changes, technical revamps, porting the backend to Unix, and fundamental design changes. With few earlier MMORPGs to take lesson from, the staff behind Ultima Online was breaking new ground and had to solve complex issues that had never been faced in a commercial game on such a wide scale before. The importance of understanding psychology, social interaction, economy, and other issues became increasingly important as complex social behavior evolved.

Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn was announced in August 2006 was released June 27, 2007. The new client, according to the Ultima Online team at Electronic Arts, is being created for the purpose of modernizing the game's look, making it easy to add new content without backsliding through outdated and outmoded art, while maintaining the niche market as an MMORPG that can be run on lower-end computers. Unfortunately, many players noted that it was released before it was really ready, as it was extremely slow on most computers and many things were still left to do, as even some of the client art was unfinished at its release (among other things). Many players ... voiced their dissatisfaction with the 'updated' art, stating it was still extremely dated in terms of its craftsmanship and overall look.
