The characters in Ultima Online are customisable to a degree beyond any online game. There is a range of skills that you have scores of up to 100 in. A maximum skill total of 700 stops you from gaining too many. This gives the choice to be an expert in seven or skilled in more. These skills (at least 50) range from swordsmanship to fishing, allowing varied characters to be created. Also certain skills work better together. Some even require you to work with other characters, as it is unlikely one person can develop all that is needed.

Ultima Online is the name of a stupid MMORPG (Massive Monster Orgy Raping Poor Gandalf). You can play online with other fat nerds, who have no real-life and get laid virtually by other people's characters which are actually played by guys. Because the graphic engine sucks big time, 93% of people who have no life are playing World of Warcraft now instead of getting married or socialize or whatever on the official UltimaOnline Servers.

Ultima Online: The Eighth Age (September 25, 2005) was a boxed game CD with an array of in-game tokens. Though not bringing any new features, the release was to celebrate Ultima Online's eighth birthday. The box included a updated game CD (with more recent patches), a glossy booklet feauring an atlas of Sosaria, in-game tokens for an anniversary gift (choice of 8), a character transfer, an advanced character and a 45-day free trial code. Also a time-limited blue soulstone was included.

The skill system is the most remarkable feature in Ultima Online. Rather than a traditional system where characters select a class and gain levels by earning experience, the UO system is completely open and usage based. A player can learn the sword, for example, simply by picking one up and using it. There were originally no restrictions on the combinations players could create.

[O]f all is the introduction of the Virtues (some of you may remember these from the Avatars Quests in the later Ultima games). There are eight of these: compassion, honesty, honour, humility, justice, sacrifice, spirituality and valour. At the time of writing only three of these are active (the others will be brought online soon) the others have been discussed on various websites. Each virtue has a series of ranks; with each successive rank you gain new abilities. To gain each rank special quests can be undertaken, for example escorting NPCs (non-player characters), different for each virtue and involving not only NPCs but other online players as well. These will be welcome extra elements to the game as they are all introduced.
