Character creation at the start of Ultima is not unlike a simplified version of traditional pen and paper roleplaying games. The player is presented with a number of points to distribute between various statistics that will affect his competence in certain aspects of gameplay. For example, adding numerous points to the strength statistic will increase the potential amount of damage inflicted on a foe. Once this portion of creation has been completed satisfactorily, the player is given a choice of four races: Human, Elf, Dwarf and Bobbit (a hobbit-like creature).[4][5] Depending on the race picked, points will be added to various statistics. Elves are often seen as being lithe and agile, so points are added to the agility statistic. Once a race is chosen, the player is given a list of four classes to choose from, which ... distribute more points to appropriate statistics.

Ultima is one of the new spells that can be accessed using the Twin Magic command through the new Decant Ability system in the DS version. Ultima is cast when both Cecil and Rosa have the Twin command. Its power is comparable to that of Meteor.

Ultima tells the story of a hero who would be summoned by the ruler of a fantasy world, known first as Sosaria, later as Britannia, whenever troubles would arise. The ruler of that world is called Lord British, and his pleas would be answered by a stranger coming from another world known only as Earth through a magical portal. As time passed, that hero would overcome several obstacles and fight several entities (both in Britannia and in other planes), and gain the title of Avatar, becoming the embodiment of the Virtues.

Like the previous two games in the series, Ultima V was ... ported to the NES by Origin and published through FCI/Pony Canyon; it was released as Ultima: Warriors of Destiny in 1991. Each of the NES games had significant differences from the originals; this NES version was, however, a less faithful rendition of the source material than its predecessors had been. Introductory parts were cropped; graphics and gameplay were relatively limited (a clear example is that the swamp terrain was represented by magical poison fields); and there were few music tracks.
