The northeast portion of the Ukraine has radiation contamination from the 1986 accident at Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Other environmental issues for this country include: deforestation; air and water pollution; inadequate supplies of potable water.

Ex-Im Bank opened for business in Ukraine in the mid- 1990's. During the first several years, Ex-Im Bank supported numerous projects in sectors ranging from agriculture machinery to power. Each project carried the sovereign guarantee. After a brief hiatus, Ex-Im Bank's business with Ukraine resumed in May 2002.

The EBRD is the largest financial investor in Ukraine. The financing provided is very diverse, including credit lines for the financial sector and small and medium-sized businesses, long-term project finance, private equity investments, debt finance for modernisation and expansion projects, import and export finance, syndication. There is a focus on financial institutions, agribusiness, real estate, power generation and transmission projects, infrastructure, including transport and municipal services and the steel sector.
