On Wednesday, October 3, 2001 the U.S. Supreme Court will hear a patent case that could overturn the precedent-setting 1980 case Diamond v. Chakrabarty, which established intellectual property rights (IPRs) for plants. The case features Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. versus J.E.M. Ag Supply Inc., a small Iowa farm supply company. Pioneer alleges that J.E.M. violated their patent rights when the company resold 1,300 bags of Pioneer's hybrid corn seed. Pioneer claims that as a patent holder of a germplasm that makes their hybrid corn different from others, only the company's authorized representatives have the right to sell the hybrid seeds.

For the second time this month, the U.S. Trade & Development Agency (USTDA) has figured out a way to siphon money from the U.S. Treasury and transfer it to Ecopetrol of Colombia. Whereas the previous handout was geared toward the modernization of the thriving company's Barrancabermeja refinery complex, the most recently discovered scheme provides yet another smokescreen for the fleecing of U.S. taxpayers: Colombian oil pipeline security.

In a debate on Defense spending on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives today, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) warned against a bunker buster bombing of Iranian nuclear research labs. "It has been well reported that there is a provision in this bill that will enable the modification of B-2 stealth bombers so that they can drop what is called a ‘bunker buster' or Massive Ordinance Penetrators (MOP) that would destroy deep underground targets," Kucinich said.

If the U.S. sees Russian dominance over the Arctic as a threat to its interests, it can do two things. First, it can send forces into the area in order to establish an American presence; this would first require an expensive upgrading of naval capacities, and, I suspect, close cooperation with Canada, Norway, and Denmark—and that would probably involve settling many of the differences among these countries.
