Earlier this month, U.S. troops entered the streets of Baghdad to restore order during a protest that turned ugly. Someone threw a homemade grenade at the Americans, wounding 13 servicemen. According to the Oct. 8 Daily Threat Assessment -- the Coalition's internal casualty report, which was shown to Newsweek -- eight soldiers were wounded seriously enough to be evacuated to military hospitals. Yet at a press conference the next day, there was no mention of the attack. Pushed by reporters, U.S. officials would only say the incident was under investigation. It was as if the ambush, and the casualties, had never happened.

On a number of points on which Hispanics and non-Hispanics differ, U.S.- born Hispanics are clearly influenced by both their Hispanic heritage and their U.S. identity. For instance, 24% of non-Hispanics cited the drain on government benefits and services as the main reason for their concern about illegal immigration, compared to 17% of U.S.-born and only 4% of foreign-born Hispanics. Some 9% of non-Hispanics are concerned because illegal immigrants' rights are not protected, versus 20% of U.S.-born and 44% of foreign-born Hispanics.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) has announced that disease-resistant cowpea can now be requested through the National Plant Germplasm System. The cowpea germplasm line GC-86L-98 has shown resistance to the cucumber mosaic virus and black-eyed cowpea mosaic virus, which combined can cause up to 86 percent of cowpea losses in the U.S. The resistant germ line was discovered in Brazil in 1978 and later sent to ARS laboratories and the National Cowpea Germplasm Collection. ARS scientists report that plant breeders can grow GC-86L-98 with other cowpea varieties in order to pass resistance genes through traditional breeding methods. The article notes that cowpea is a top five food fiber crop in the world due to its ability to tolerate poor, dry soils. Requests for GC-86L-98 can be made at: [http://www.ars-grin.gov/npgs/orders.html].
