Tyrrhenian Sea: Tiber River
built 289 days ago
The Apennines form the backbone of the peninsula, stretching in a wide arc concave to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Corno Grande (Gran Sasso d'Italia) is the highest peak. A large part of central Italy is characterized by a green hilly landscape, through which the rivers Arno and Tevere (Tiber) run. The southern section of the chain pushes out to the east forming the Gargano promontory and, sloping down further south, the Salentine peninsula.
Rome is located on the Tiber River in the west-central part of the Italian mainland, 15 miles (24 kilometers) from the Tyrrhenian Sea (part of the Mediterranean), where its ancient port was at Ostia. Rome lies on the Campagna, a coastal lowland built up from volcanic rocks and clays. This plain is bordered on the east by the high Apennine Mountains.

The city of Rome grew from settlements on and around the Palatine Hill, approximately eighteen miles from the Tyrrhenian Sea on the river Tiber. At this location the Tiber has an island where the river can be forded. Because of the river and the ford, Rome was at a crossroads of traffic and trade.
South of Tuscany, in the province of Grosseto, the National Park of Maremma overlooks the Tyrrhenian sea and extends towards the mainland, stretching from the sand dunes to the woodland and the nearby mountains. This protected area ... covers the final stretch of the Ombrone river and shows all the typical habitats of Maremma: sea coasts, marshes, dunes, forests towards the inland, the Uccellina hills, to end up with the Mediterranean 'macchia' or bushland and pine forests within a stone's throw from the sea.
