Tyrian 2000 box cover Tyrian is one of the best top-down shooters ever made for the PC, period. With excellent graphics, smooth animations, and many inventive enemies and levels, it remains one of the best-loved shooters that still stay on many fans? hard drives. Newcomer XSIV Games had a lot to live up to in developing the unofficial sequel to this masterpiece, but fortunately, Tyrian 2000 more than deserves the Tyrian name.
Tyrian is nothing like your run-of-the-mill shoot-'em-up. It gained a following even larger than the classic Raptor: Call of the Shadows, and rightfully so: it has a plot. A plot, you ask? Yes. And even a complex one. You play the role of Trent Hawkings, this galaxy's ace solo fighter-pilot, whose luck forces him to save the galaxy, one time after another.

The Australian cover artwork of Tyrian After work began on graphics, the popularity of Tyrian rose at Epic MegaGames. Arturo Sinclair from Storm Front Studios joined to create rendered artwork for planets and character faces. The developers wanted a "simple and fun solution" for the interface, and changed it at least three times before deciding on a final design. At this point, Tyrian was almost complete; with the "LOUDNESS" sound system, near-completed sound effects, and a marketing plan head by Mark Rein. At this time, Tim Sweeney approached the team and informed them Tyrian was to be published as a full fledged Epic MegaGames product. It was later released in 1995.
The Tyrian lives in Midhgardh and is very much a part of it, but learns not to worry about the trivia of Midhgardh. Tyrians often work to build things they know they will never live to see completed. But that does not matter to a Tyrian. If the work is good, it is worth doing. Tyrians say, "The glacier knows where it is going and when it will get there. It does not matter if others know or not."

Anyone who remembers the original Tyrian may ... remember that some years after its release, an unofficial sequel, Tyrian 2000 was released as shareware. So does it live up to the Tyrian name? In short yes. Not only does it use the same excellent graphical style that the original Tyrian used, but it has over one hundred weapons and levels, including various secret levels and different playing modes. The best news of all is that back in 2004, the game was made freeware by its developer, Jason Emery.

In the fifth episode, added in Tyrian 2000, it is revealed that the Hazudra strapped a proximity bomb to Trent's ship to send him in another direction than Earth. They then use Trent to take out the Zinglonites, who invade space with space-dwelling fruit. The new episode ... featured new ships, shields and weapons to complete that task.
