Tyrese: Albums
built 289 days ago
Tyrese Tyrese got his start at age 17 as a model for Tommy Hilfiger. After his chiseled physique helped him (or, rather, his pin-up) to infilitrate the bedrooms and lockers of teenage girls across America, Tyrese turned towards their mommas, fixing his smoldering gaze on the music industry and a second career as a sex-'em-up soul singer. His 1998 self-titled debut proved that there was a pretty, sensual singing voice behind that prettier face, but it was 2000 Watts that put him on the map as far as the charts were concerned. In the interim between albums, the model/singer added 'actor' to his accomplishments, dabbling (and finding success) in films like 2 Fast 2 Furious. On fourth album Alter Ego, Tyrese returned to the boudoir and tried his hand at hip hop, devoting the second disc of the album to "Black Ty," his emcee persona.

Tyrese immediately set about building upon the success of the album. He contributed a song, "Criminal Mind," to the soundtrack of the hit Martin Lawrence film Blue Streak, and landed a host slot on the hip-hop oriented MTV Jams program on cable television. Guest slots on television series flowed his way: he appeared on Martin, Sister Sister, Moesha, and Hangin' with Mr. Cooper. He appealed to audiences of many different backgrounds; though firmly rooted in the R&B and hip-hop genres, he expressed a desire to collaborate musically with country superstar Garth Brooks. The pursuit of sheer exposure was the smartest move Tyrese could have made, for his physical appearance was remarkable.

Though Tyrese's voice is heavily vocordered on the first couple of tracks on 2000 Watts, throughout most of the album, his vocal instrument is pew-thumping. Quivering pleasingly for romantic numbers and seemingly hitting whatever timbre he chooses to reach for on more edgy cuts.

Tyrese once said that he's rolling out his talents slowly, with the sole purpose of trying not to "overwhelm people." Who has time for humility in a career that's included being a Tommy Hilfiger model, a part-time MTV host, a Grammy-nominated R&B singer, a film actor, and, on his most recent double album, Alter Ego, a rapper? This month, with his role in director Michael Bay's kajillion-dollar action pig-out, Transformers, the 28-year-old Renaissance man adds another line to his CV as a hunter of evil robots. But here, the perennially single Tyrese tells all about his oldest forte: first-degree lady-killing.

Tyrese, a model-singer-actor, goes for one hyphen too many on “Alter Ego,” a double album split between slow-grind R&B songs and his newest job: rapper. The CD of songs continues Tyrese’s career-long homage to R. Kelly, with oozing minor-key synthesizer grooves and a variety pack of come-ons, from a marriage proposal (“One”) to a shrug at infidelity (“Better to Know”). Mr. Kelly produces one song and provides guest vocals on another, revealing how pallid Tyrese sounds by comparison.

Tyrese keeps in direct contact with his fans by sending periodic voice messages. He speaks frequently about motivation, getting in shape, spirituality, and relationship issues, as well as news about his upcoming movies, tours, and albums.
