www.nextofkin.com Typhoid fever is caused by a bacterium (germ) called Salmonella typhi. This bacterium may contaminate food or drink in areas of poor sanitation. Symptoms include diarrhoea, high fever, and a serious illness which may last for some time. It is sometimes fatal.

Typhoid and paratyphoid infections occur worldwide. Outbreaks occur in areas with poor sanitation and inadequate sewerage systems. Approximately 30-35 cases of enteric fever occur in Victoria each year. The majority of these are returned travellers, especially from the Indian subcontinent.
Typhoid bacteria enter the digestive tract and gain access to the bloodstream. Inflammation of the small and large intestine follows. In severe infections, which can be life threatening, sores may develop in the small intestine. These sores bleed and sometimes perforate the intestinal wall.

Typhoid vaccine is generally given in an oral form (Vivotif Berna) consisting of four capsules taken on alternate days until completed. The capsules should be kept refrigerated and taken with cool liquid. Protection is achieved seven days after the last dose. Side-effects are uncommon and may include abdominal discomfort, nausea, and rash or hives. Oral typhoid vaccine should not be taken with antibiotics, because they may interfere with its effectiveness. If all four doses are not taken, the entire series must be restarted to achieve protection.
Oral Typhoid Vaccine – This vaccine is given as a series of doses either as a liquid or capsule. Finish the series of doses at least one week before you travel. Adults and children 3 years of age and older are given three doses of the liquid form of vaccine. Adults and children 6 years of age and older are given four doses of the capsule form of vaccine. Both the liquid and capsule forms of the vaccine will be given to you to take at home. The travel clinic will provide instructions on how to take the vaccine.
