Ty the Tasmanian Tiger: Ty 2
built 293 days ago
Ty 2 implements a strange monetary system based on fire opals, which can be used to purchase new boomerangs and vehicle licenses throughout the game. There is a slight problem with this, though. Since levels can be replayed, and fire opals reappear each time you replay a level, you could conceivably play through an easy level time and time again and become rich in fire opals. This certainly makes for an easy time purchasing anything that a player could ever want within the game.
Where Ty 2 does push back the borders of banality, it does so with small touches and incidental things. Many levels are filled with beautiful blink-and-you'll-miss-them moments such as the Koala RAC going about their business hauling a car to safety after plunging from a bridge, or old inhabitants of towns stopping for a chat with their friends. It may not actually add anything to the game, but its endearing nonetheless.
The actual gameplay in Ty 2 is pretty standard stuff. You’ll go through many large levels (which are transplanted from the console versions) as Ty, with simple jumping puzzles and enemies that appear. You can dispose of these enemies with Ty’s handy boomerangs, which can be upgraded as you progress through the game. The game makes is overwhelmingly easy to fight and as such, older gamers will have a breeze going through the game.

Sound effects in Ty 2 are, like the graphics, unique and stylish. Your boomerangs make a distinctive ‘swishing’ sound as they travel through the air. The sound of your steps change appropriately depending upon the surface you are walking on.

Ty 2 does a respectable job improving on its own gameplay, but much more was needed to make it stand out amongst the current generation of platforming goodness. But if you’re bored and need something to rent for a weekend, Ty 2 should do the trick.

Warp - This technological stone allows Ty to teleport between special Warp crystals (much like the Warparang in Ty 2). A second warp stone will give you a 3-hit forcefield. A third stone will ... make you invisible. These are best used with the Lasharang chassis, as they negate all but Ultra stones and limit the rang's range to that of the Lasharang's.
