Ty Lee is a cheerful and somewhat ditsy young Fire Nation acrobat/gymnast, the daughter of a nobleman, who grew up at the Fire Nation royal court and attended the Royal Fire Academy for Girls with her friends, Azula and Mai. There they learned things on the fire nation and was lucky by being the royal fire nation princess's friend. Ty Lee is a formidable hand-to-hand combatant, utilizing a martial art attacking pressure points on the human body. This was proven when she was easily able to take down an elite platoon of Earthbenders alone. By striking a bender's pressure points she is able to disrupt the victim's chi flow and temporarily remove their ability to bend. According to nick.com, she can tell people's mood by looking at their aura or feeling their chi.

Aside from his several jobs, Ty lives a basically normal life, as he puts it. He currently resides in the Los Angeles suburb of Venice, California, with his manager/girlfriend, Andrea Bock. On a recent appearance on E!'s True Hollywood Story, Ty reported that he and his girlfriend are waiting to marry and start a family until Ty is no longer traveling for his work.

Ty and his wife Kesha established a non-profit foundation called "First and Goal" that contributes to a number of causes. In 2006, "First & Goal" sponsored a shopping spree for 25 children from the Yawkey Boys & Girls Club of Roxbury. More than 20 of Ty's teammates joined him to participate in the "Shop with a Jock" event.
