The Twins are a big drain on the revenue sharing system, but at least owner Carl Pohlad puts the money back into the team despite the billionaire's cheapstake reputation around baseball. Payroll has gone from $16 million to $60 million in five years. The Twins added 130 new sold out luxury seats behind home plate last season that generated almost a $1 million in revenue. To move out from the bottom of baseball's revenue list, the team needs a new stadium. Last year, the Twins had an agreement on a new $478 million park with Hennepin County, but the state legislature wouldn't vote on the proposal to raise the county sales tax. The Twins were to put up $125 million of the cost plus overruns on the construction.

The Twins is a baseball franchise based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, that participates in the Major League. The franchise had its beginnings as the Washington Nationals/Washington Senators, who participated in the American League since its establishment in 1901. The baseball franchise changed hands in 1905, when it was sold to Thomas C. Noyes. The Minnesota-based franchise maintained its dual name until 1956, when owner Calvin Griffith officially changed the team’s name to Washington Senators. During its time as a Washington-based franchise, the baseball team had won a World Series title in 1924, with the help of legendary pitcher Walter Perry “Big Train Johnson.” The “Nats” was ... able to bag three American League pennants, the first of which was in 1924, the second in 1925, and the third in 1933.

In the years since then, Twins Baseball has experienced mixed results on the baseball field. Post-season play for the Minnesota Twins has included three trips to the World Series, with the American League team’s only win coming at the end of the 1987 baseball season. Although the Minnesota Twins faltered during much of the 1990s, the first decade of the 21st century has been a promising one for the ball club. In 2002, the Minnesota Twins made their first trip to the American League championship series since 1991, but failed to clinch the pennant.

Although the Metrodome may be considered one of the worst venues in baseball, Twins fans still come out each spring and summer to see their team play. The Twins have called Minneapolis their home since 1961, playing their first two decades at Metropolitan Stadium. Located in Bloomington, MN the Twins shared this stadium with the Minnesota Vikings (NFL). By the mid 1970s it began to show its age. Both teams began the push for a new stadium and in 1977 the Minnesota State Legislature passed a bill authorizing construction of a multipurpose domed stadium. A 25 acre site was chosen in downtown Minneapolis for the stadium and construction began on December 20, 1979.

Originally from Washington, D.C., the Minnesota Twins arrived as the first professional baseball team in Minneapolis in 1960. In 1965 they won their first American League Pennant and in 1987 their first World Series. In the next few years the Twins built an even stronger roster, including Shane Mack, Scott Leius, Chili Davis, Chuck Knoblauch, Scott Erickson, Rick Aguilera and Jack Morris.
