Samsung SlimFit HDTV sets, which offer the benefits of a CRT but in a much slimmer case, have rapidly become the most popular CRT TV with shoppers. There have been some reports of geometry problems, particularly in HDTVs, but new circuitry promises to address that issue. JVC's standard-definition TVs get some nice feedback; the company's sole direct-view HDTV ... does well but is hard to find. Toshiba makes a handful of standard-definition digital TVs, and these can be good budget picks.

SBN is now the only Chinese TV media settling in Australia besides CCTV-4. SBN has started digital satellite broadcasts via the TVBS-Asia interactive TV platform since January 1 and its signal covers the whole of Australia. If you've purchased a new TV set since 2004, your chances of having a built-in digital tuner improve dramatically. Starting in 2004, many of the TV sets sold at popular electronics stores have featured digital tuners that will let you receive the new digital over-the-air broadcasts starting in February 2009. But be wary: It's not a sure thing. Even some of the newer TV sets are purely display monitors that lack the internal circuitry needed to pick up digital broadcasts. Usually these sets have been advertised as "HD-ready" or "HDTV monitor" sets. As of now, U.S. broadcasters face an FCC-imposed deadline of July 2007 for set manufacturers to make all new TV's with 13-inch screens or larger digital-ready. But the Consumer Electronics Association says it doubts Americans would rush out and buy the new sets, noting studies that show Americans tend to replace their TVs only every eight to ten years.
