LYCOS RETRIEVER
Tux Racer
built 274 days ago
Originally slated for the Linux-based Indrema console, Tux Racer is a racing title starring the Linux mascot, Tux the Penguin. Along with his friends Boris, Neva, and Samuel, Tux slides his way through a series of downhill courses while collecting herring and avoiding the many obstacles that dot the sloped tracks. Each character is capable of performing a jump maneuver that, when charged, propels the animal farther. The longer the button is held, the more the "EnergoMeter" that governs the strength of the jump increases. Players can compete in Practice or Cup events, the latter offering a gauntlet of courses for players to complete. The Cup events are made up of a series of three races, each with specific requirements such as time, herring collected, and score to achieve.

Tux Racer is a lovely game, it provides nice detailed graphics, sounds and music. There are several different tracks to challenge. There are still some flaws, for example right now there is neither a multiplayer option nor can you compete with computer opponents. But these issues can be found in the list of future improvements, so let's hope they will be implemented soon. Same is with the possibility to change settings from within the game via menus.

When the first release of Tux Racer comes out, it will be an OEM release and will only be available for Windows, because Sunspire has not secured a retail publisher yet, and there aren't any Linux OEMs. The tuxracer.com Web site is pretty emphatic about its claims that the retail, boxed version of Tuxracer 1.0 will be for Linux, Mac, and Windows, but no deals with publishers have materialized yet.

Tux Racer is open source. Therefore you can either get the source and the needed data files or decide to download precompiled packages from the Sunspire Studio website. Well, at the time of writing this article, the precompiled packages are promised but not really available. However, compiling the source shouldn't be a problem.

Tux Racer 0.61a has been released for Windows. This is a small patch on the 0.61 package for Windows; the only difference is that a more recent version of SDL.dll (1.1.8 instead of 1.1.7) is used. This fixes problems that many people experienced with version 0.61 on Windows 98SE.
